The Scarlet Ibis is one of the national birds of Trinidad. At one hour’s drive just south of Port of Spain one can find the Caroni Swamp. Swamp ibises feed in neighboring Venezuela, some 11 miles away. However, there are a few who stay closer to home. Like flamingos and roseate spoonbills, the diet of the scarlet ibises gives them their rich color. If they stop eating their favorite crabs, then they lose their color.People from all over the world come to the swamp to see the flocks of scarlet ibises returning home. The Caroni Swamp is located in Northwestern Trinidad. A huge mass of Trinidad is covered by this maze of trees and waterways. It is also home to thousands of beautiful Scarlet Ibises. Other animals coexist in the swamp as well; some of these are fiddler crabs, oysters, four-eyed fish, tree boa and spectacled cayman. Beware of the passing snake or frog. The Caroni Swamp is one of the breeding grounds for this beautiful and majestic bird. As the boat guide starts to take you back at the end of the day, you travel through this aquatic marvel and it is possible that you will see a breathtaking sunset. There is a particularly large open space where the boat stops so that the passengers can gawk at the sunset. |
